“I work at the intersection of improvisation, process, and participatory art. Growing up in a residency built by graphic artists Vladimir Favorsky and animal sculptor Ivan Efimov, creativity has been part of my life from the very start. Before fully committing to my art, I spent 15 years in graphic design, where I developed a real love for detail, which I’ve carried into my artistic practice. I also studied acting, performed in theater, and earned a degree in directing and filming movies. Around that time, I started my photography project Usual Routes, which now includes over 6,000 photos taken in 30 countries. Today, I bring all these experiences into my work, combining drawing, performance, and video.”
Andronik Khachiian is an artist whose work navigates the intersection of improvisation, process, and participatory art. Raised in the house built by Russian artists Vladimir Favorsky and Ivan Efimov, Andronik was immersed in creativity from an early age. Before fully dedicating himself to art, he spent 15 years in graphic design, where his love for detail transitioned into his artistic practice. He also studied acting and performed in theater while concurrently completing a degree in directing and filming movies. During this time, he worked on his photography project Usual Routes, which consists of over 6,000 photographs taken across 30 countries. Now, Andronik draws on all his accumulated experiences in his art practice, incorporating drawing, performance, and video.
Andronik’s work navigates the intersection of improvisation, process, and participatory art, exploring themes of time, memory vs. imagination, and curiosity. He is particularly interested in the emotional landscape, using spontaneous creativity as a way to connect with raw feelings. His projects often reject conventional logic, patterns, and color theory, instead focusing on improvisation and free expression. Through his work, he encourages others to engage in the creative process, fostering an environment where shared experiences and personal exploration can emerge.
Andronik’s projects Somewhere Over the Rainbow (SOR) and Death of a Hero (DOH) exemplify the interplay between improvisation and meticulous attention to micro-details. In SOR, a black-and-white series, he sublimates his broken heart into landscapes with emotions born in darkness, symbolizing a journey toward the light, from which color later emerges in his subsequent project. From the first work to the last, one can observe the healing process as color comes into DOH, where the landscapes serve as a refuge from grief. This second project began after a series of personal losses and the death of Alexey Navalny in early 2024.
His project Flags of Destinies, initiated at the start of the war in Ukraine, consists of over 300 flags. Each flag represents an individual fate, with each stripe symbolizing an emotional period. This project is his attempt at reclaiming the subjectivity of war victims who have been reduced to numbers.
In Relationships With Light, Andronik uses backlit foam board to explore dual narratives, illuminating the reverse side to reveal both sides of the artwork simultaneously. This technique allows him to delve into various relationships, including those between past and present, different energies, and the self.
Additionally, his participatory art project Empty Space helps individuals overcome the fear of a blank page and the intimidation of not being able to draw. Through gamification, Andronik provides tools such as drills with markers and museum walls for drawing, helping participants engage with their raw emotions and confront their creative barriers.
In 2022, Andronik relocated to Mexico, where he participated in launching the AYARKUT foundation, which invests in social projects within contemporary art. He also initiated Culto Colecta, organizing pop-up exhibitions of Latin American artists with the goal of cultivating a new generation of collectors, offering favorable conditions for artists, and popularizing contemporary art among those who are not yet interested in or feel intimidated by it. The project has garnered significant media attention, with features in Vogue Latin America, Mexico’s leading art magazine La Tempestad, and the American magazine BmoreArt. Andronik currently splits his time between Mexico and Berlin.
